Recently, President Mohammed Buhari approved the appointment of Mr. Mohammed Adamu as the Acting Inspector General of Police.
This was sequel to the retirement of former IGP, Mr. Idris Mohammed.
The appointment which was seen as critical however, raised concern in view of the general elections which is fast approaching and the state of security.
Some Nigerians were of the view that with the level of preparation made so far, the former Inspector General of Police should have been allowed to remain in office until after the election which is just a few weeks away.
Others argued that whether this or that, election will come and go and what happens thereafter, will testify to the efficiency and effectiveness of the force.
It is therefore heartwarming that the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu on assumption of office, promised to provide professional and responsible leadership to advance the fortune of the police.
He also expressed readiness to ensure that peace was restored to all troubled parts of the country.
In the words of the acting IGP, the force was blessed with officers who were not only intellectually gifted but exceptionally dedicated.
These men should be put to good use, more so with increasing spate of kidnapping, robbery, armed banditry, ritual killings and murder as election approaches.
It is on record that salaries and allowances of officers and men of the force have been reviewed, other measures that could make life better for them should be considered to boost their moral.
Against the general saying, that “the police is your friend”, citizens see them as corrupt and have no iota of respect for them.
The acting IGP should do more in this regard to change this negative perception of the men and officers of the force.
It boggles the mind, in a situation whereby, criminals have access to more sophisticated weapons than the police, hence gadgets and equipment that are relevant should be provided for officers to meet up with current realities.
There should be cohesive coordination of both human and material resources available to the force for smooth running of operations.
A special mechanism should be set up to provide protection for members of the public who give useful information to the police as an encouragement to do more.
Most importantly, the acting IGP should make it a matter of principle to synergize with other security agencies to record significant milestone in the fight against crime.
